25 years for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Well it is officially October! :D This month means many things, Halloween, the fact that fall is upon us (the leaves have already started turning! :D), my birthday and the start of National breast cancer awareness month.

This October is especially important for the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization, as it marks its 25 anniversary.
Since its beginning, the NBCAM has helped to promote awareness of breast cancer. Before organizations, such as NBCAM, and people battling breast cancer like First Lady Betty Ford spoke openly about this disease, breast cancer was a disease that women didn't speak about and feared as an absolute death sentence because of their total lack of knowledge on the subject.

The NBCAM works together with a partnership of national public service organizations, government agencies and professional medical associations in order to raise breast cancer awareness. They do this by sharing information on breast cancer and providing more access to services. Breast cancer ranks as the second highest cancer to kill women. This year, an estimated 192,370 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. alone. Death rates for breast cancer have decreased in women since the '90s mainly due to the progress made in earlier detection and better treatment. The NBCAM realizes that while 25 years is something to celebrate, there is still much more to accomplish.

So here's to 25 years of learning, growing and surviving!
